Plan a Peace Day Event – Education
Education is a necessary part of the peacebuilding movement. Only by spreading the idea of a culture of peace can we hope to create lasting change. It starts as early as preschool and kindergarten, where small children can learn about peace through art projects and role plays. Older students and adults can learn more through seminars, conflict resolution classes and campus events.
Examples of Peace Day events:
- Small children can draw pictures of themselves, saying what makes them feel peaceful
- Small children: talk about how to act peacefully towards each other
- Small children: do a puppet show about peace
- Do a role play on peace
- Write peace statements on pieces of paper and turn them into objects of art
- Make “Pinwheels for Peace” (www.pinwheelsforpeace.com)
- Drawing Competition on the theme of peace or Peace Day
- Create peace posters
- Make origami peace doves, write notes about peace on them and display
- Include Conflict Resolution in the curriculum for the day or week around September 21
- Ask students to express “What is Peace?” by drawing or writing, followed by a discussion
- Submit your artwork to the annual Peace Pals International Arts Exhibition and Awards (age 5-19 years) (www.wppspeacepals.org)
- Create a giant Peace Dove, display in a public space (www.rootsandshoots.org/campaigns/dove)
- Build a peace wall with statements/art about peace
- Join the interactive music project for peace and harmony by singing “The beauty of our world”, organized by “United We Change” (www.loveandpeace.info)
- Sign up for a Conflict Resolution Theory class, organize an event with other students
